HISTORY
The TNRD was incorporated and held its first Board meeting on November 24, 1967. The provincial objective in creating regional districts was to more efficiently and economically deliver services to unincorporated areas of the province on a local, sub-regional and regional basis. In general terms, a regional district’s role is to provide (a) regional governance and services for the region as a whole, (b) a political forum for representation of its residents and communities and (c) a vehicle for advancing the interests of the region as a whole.
In 1968, regional hospital districts were created as co-terminus with the regional district.

The first functions undertaken by the TNRD included land use planning, building and plumbing regulations, street lighting, fire protection and mosquito control.
Today the TNRD operates more than 120 separate services. In addition to those listed above, the TNRD also delivers services for refuse, recycling, water, sewer, parks, trails and 9-1-1 just to name a few.
CONTESTS
Throughout 2017, the TNRD will carry out a number of interactive contests that we hope will interest members of the public.
Trivia Contest
We will pose a weekly trivia question with a prize awarded each month to one of the respondents who has answered one of that month’s trivia questions correctly. On November 24th, the names of all of the respondents who have correctly answered a trivia question throughout the year will be entered into a draw for a 50th anniversary celebration prize.
Short Story Contest
From April 1st to May 31st, the TNRD will accept submissions for short stories featuring an aspect of the TNRD – this could be a location, an event or a person from history. The maximum length of a story will be 1,000 words and it can be any genre (examples: autobiographical, science fiction, mystery, etc.). A waiver form must be submitted with each entry allowing for the release of the names and publishing of the submission on the TNRD website and other promotion.
Prizes will be awarded in each of the following age groups:
Up to 12 years old
13 to 20 years old
21 years and older
Colouring Contest
From July 1st to August 31st, the TNRD will accept colouring contest submissions at each of its libraries. Colouring sheets and crayons will be provided at each of the libraries. Prizes will be awarded in each of the following age groups:
Up to 5 years old
6 to 9 years old
10 to 12 years old
Photo Contest
From Sept 1st to October 31st, the TNRD will accept photos taken in the TNRD of nature/scenery and people. Submissions will be accepted during those dates in JPG or JPEG format with a size between 4 MB and 10 MB. A waiver form must be submitted with each entry allowing for the release of the names and photos on the TNRD website and other promotions. Entries will become the property of the TNRD. Prizes will be awarded as follows:
Up to 17 years old each category
18 years and older each category

EVENTS
We invite you to celebrate the TNRD’s 50th anniversary at events throughout the regional district starting on October 10th . We welcome you to join us at a library location near you to meet your TNRD director and TNRD staff. Refreshments will be served.
