The TNRD’s Emergency Operations Center has remained in close contact with the Savona Improvement District and impacted residents since the flash floods that occurred Sunday June 30th.
We are grateful to still be able to confirm there have been no reported injuries, no impacts to critical infrastructure, and roads have remained re-opened. There are still an estimated twenty (20) properties that were impacted to varying degrees by the flash flooding.
We are also thankful for a significant financial donation from Enbridge, that will allow the TNRD to partner with the Skeetchestn Indian Band and Savona Improvement District to offer debris removal to Savona residents impacted by the flooding event on June 30th.
Commencing Wednesday July 3, 2024 Skeetchestn Indian Band will have volunteers in the community assisting with debris removal. The initial focus will be on mud, trees, and organic materials, which will be gathered and taken to the Savona Transfer Station for processing. Residents who have this organic material on their properties are encouraged (as able) to move it to the curbside for pick up.
In addition to the removal of mud, trees, and organic materials, the TNRD will be offering curbside collection of household flood debris from impacted properties. Curbside collection will take place on Monday July 8, 2024. The Savona Improvement District will support in the distribution of 6 mil disposal bags for community members to use for clean-up of certain items.
To facilitate the curbside collection, flood affected residents should sort debris into the following piles:
- Drywall and asbestos containing materials (please keep separate, double bag in 6 mil bags)
- Mattresses, metal, large appliances, and furniture (stacked neatly)
- Any spoiled food must be removed from fridges/freezers and double bagged
- Wood and large building debris
- Bagged refuse (food waste should be double bagged and placed at curbside Monday morning before 8 a.m.)
- No hazardous or liquid materials such as oil, gas or other chemicals will be accepted curbside
Skeetchestn Indian Band volunteers, and the TNRD contractors will not be entering structures or private property to remove material or assist with clean up.
Impacted residents should check with their insurer and take photos for any claims through your insurer or other disaster financial assistance. If you have incurred disposal fees, please keep your receipts as they may be reimbursable by your insurance provider or other disaster funding (if available).
