2024 Housing Needs Report
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is currently undertaking an update to its Housing Needs Report for 10 Electoral Areas and 9 participating Member Municipalities. This is a legislative requirement from the Province of BC for municipalities and regional districts in B.C., and the Housing Needs Report must be updated by January 1, 2025.
Participating communities include:
- All Electoral Areas (“A,” “B,” “E,” “I,” “J,” “L,” “M,” “N,” “O,” & “P”)
- Village of Ashcroft
- District of Barriere
- Village of Cache Creek
- Village of Chase
- District of Clearwater
- Village of Clinton
- District of Logan Lake
- City of Merritt
- Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality
Community Survey
We’re seeking community input to help develop a better understanding of current and emerging housing challenges and housing needs of residents.
By filling out the Housing Needs Survey, you can help to identify housing gaps and housing priorities, leading to recommendations on ensuring sufficient and suitable housing over the next 20 years. This survey will be open until July 31, 2024.

2021 Housing Needs Report
The Board of Directors accepted the Regional Housing Needs Report for all TNRD Electoral Areas (Electoral Area “O” excluded) at the regular meeting on February 18, 2021.

Background
In February of 2020, the TNRD received a $150,000 grant from Union of BC Municipalities as the primary applicant for a regional housing needs report. The project covers Electoral Areas “A”, “B”, “E”, “I”, “J”, “L”, “M”, “N”, and “P,” with Cache Creek, Clearwater, Clinton, Logan Lake, Merritt, and Sun Peaks, as partnering municipalities.
Housing Needs Reports require the following steps:
- Collect information to identify current and projected housing needs;
- Prepare and publish a Housing Needs Report online, which shows current and projected housing needs for at least the next five years; and
- Consider this information and the Housing Needs Report when amending Official Community Plans and Regional Growth Strategies.
Engagement Process
The engagement process was a key component of the TNRD Housing Needs Assessment. M’akola Development Services was retained to conduct the engagement process with TNRD staff. A variety of engagement events were hosted, including focus groups, key informant interviews, an online survey, and presenting preliminary findings at council meetings of partnering municipalities.

- Identifying community strengths to inform asset-based recommendations
