March 24, 2020 – Solid Waste Services Update

In our continued efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 while continuing essential solid waste services, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District will temporarily ONLY be accepting bagged household garbage and recycling at all Eco-Depots and Transfer Stations.

In order to reduce the number of people visiting disposal facilities we are asking residents to only bring in garbage generated from inside your home (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) and ensure that it is bagged and tied closed.

Please only bring in recycling from essential items such as paper, cardboard, and containers coming from the grocery stores or pharmacy.

Customers are encouraged to limit their trips to an Eco-Depot or Transfer Station and limit the time they spend on site. By pre-sorting recycling you will be able to quickly deposit material and limit interaction with attendants.

Please do not bring the following waste/recyclable materials to your local Eco-Depot or Transfer Station:

  • No construction or renovation waste
  • No yard waste
  • No batteries
  • No used oil
  • No tires
  • No electronics and small appliances
  • No paint & other household hazardous waste
  • No scrap metal
  • No propane tanks
  • No appliances
  • No mattresses & furniture
  • No clothing donations

“This is not the time to load up your truck from a home renovation project or spring cleaning. We saw a large increase in customers over the weekend that seemed to be doing just that. Please hold onto these items until we return to normal operations,” said Ken Gillis, TNRD Chair.

It is important that customers observe social distancing while on site. Access to the site may be limited depending on customer volume. Please be patient as we put these measures in place to keep all our residents, staff and contractors safe. The TNRD is committed to keep solid waste facilities operational as a critical service in the TNRD.

Free Disposal Days and Household Hazardous Waste Round-Ups have been postponed until further notice. These events typical take place in April and May and the TNRD will determine new dates at a future time.

For those residents of Savona, Tobiano, Cherry Creek, Blue River and Avola – curbside collection will continue following the normal schedule. For other curbside collection programs please contact your municipality. Residents with curbside collection are also being reminded to bag and tie garbage to avoid litter.

For Barnhartvale/Monte Creek area residents, please be advised that the City of Kamloops is temporarily not accepting garbage at the Barnhartvale landfill. Please use the South Thompson Eco-Depot (Pritchard) and Westwold facilities in the meantime, and visit the TNRD website for hours of operation.

Please continue to monitor our website, social media, and local news agencies for updates and changes to these policies. For Solid Waste-related questions please contact 250-377-2596 or recycleright@tnrd.ca.

March 19, 2020 – Solid Waste Services Update

The TNRD Environmental Services Department would like to assure residents that all Eco-Depots and Transfer Stations are operating normal hoursAs a core service offered by the TNRD, solid waste disposal will continue to be available to residents at this time. Our contractors and their staff are working hard to continue providing this service and are being supported by TNRD staff at the Kamloops office or working remotely. Continue to monitor tnrd.ca, our social media, and local news agencies for relevant changes. Although our offices are closed to the public we still are in full operation and available to answer your questions, please reach out to 1-877-377-8673 to be directed.

Onsite, our staff are being directed to observe BC Centre for Disease Control recommended social distancing and more frequent cleaning of surfaces (such as debit machines). As such residents may notice attendants will be unable to assist with offloading or sorting but will be happy to point you in the right direction. Please be prepared to offload, handle, and sort your own waste. Similarly we want to remind residents to bag (and tie) your garbage to avoid litter or waste blown around site. When it comes time to pay attendants will avoid handling cards (credit, debit, eco-cards) and will ask residents to insert the card into the Point of Sale machine and/or hold out the Eco-Card to be punched.

Curbside collection will remain unchanged in Savona, Tobiano, Cherry Creek, Blue River and Avola at this time. Any changes will be notified across our communication channels. For other curbside programs please contact your municipality. Residents with curbside collection are also being reminded to bag and tie garbage to avoid litter.

Free Disposal Days and Household Hazardous Waste Round-Ups will be postponed until further notice. These events typical take place in April and May and the TNRD will determine new dates at a future time.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to evolve we will offer the best possible solid waste disposal option we can. Please check online before making a trip to an Eco-Depot or Transfer Station to verify they are still open and operating as normal.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is closely monitoring information about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and has developed a plan based on the recommendations of health officials to ensure every precaution is taken to keep public and staff healthy and safe.

Currently, all TNRD services and Library locations remain open. Our Library programs are continuing as planned; however, we will be temporarily suspending two of our Library services: Reader’s Home Services and public computer access in all branches.

These services will be suspended immediately. Members of the public who are symptomatic will be asked to leave the premises. If you encounter this situation, please alert your supervisor or manager.

These decisions were made to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 to residents who are at high-risk for severe illness from the virus, and to limit the transmission from contaminated surfaces.

If you are unable to visit our branches in person, please note that our digital services are always available. Access eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks and kids resources; and use online resources from the comfort of home with your TNRL Library card. For assistance using any of these services, call your local TNRL branch. If you have any questions about other TNRD-provided services in your community, please call 250-377-8673 or toll-free in BC at 1-877-377-8673.

The TNRD will continue to monitor the news and recommendations of health officials and will take additional steps as needed.
