Community Wildfire Protection Special Projects

For the purpose of this program, fuel management is defined as the process of changing forest fuels to reduce aggressive fire behaviour. This may include common treatments such as thinning, spacing and pruning trees. This process will reduce fuel loading in the forest and reduce the potential for devastating wildfires.

Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiatives were developed in 2004 with funding from the Ministry of Forests and Range and administered by the Union of BC Municipalities. Program intent is to support communities in wildfire risk mitigation efforts.

Fuel management initiatives will help reduce the possibility of devastating wildfire losses such as those experienced in the summer of 2003.

Grants are available for prescription development, conducting pilot projects and undertaking operation works.
