Got Weeds? Let’s Talk! Invasive Plant Field Day is Coming to Little Fort

Kamloops, BC – June 11, 2024 – The Thompson-Nicola Invasive Plant Management Committee (TNIPMC) is hosting its annual invasive plant field day this year in Little Fort. Invasive plant specialists from the TNIPMC, Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and Purity Feed will be on site to share information on invasive plants in Little Fort, Barriere, Clearwater and surrounding areas of the North Thompson valley.

When: June 20, 2024, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Where: Latremouille Park, 148 Highway 24, Little Fort, B.C.

“This free event is being offered to help residents and land practitioners be stewards of the land by learning how to identify and manage key invasive plants that are established, or are just getting a foot hold, in the Little Fort, Barriere and Clearwater areas. We are hoping participants walk away from the workshop with the necessary tools to take action on their lands, and the desire to keep the area natural, resilient and free of invasive plants,” said Coleen Hougen, TNRD Integrated Pest Management Supervisor.

Common invasive plants found in the North Thompson valley include hoary alyssum, common tansy, orange hawkweed, yellow hawkweed, and baby’s breath.

Private landowners, land managers and members of the public are welcome to attend and learn about select invasive plants and how to manage them. Participants are welcome to bring their mystery plants for identification.

All participants must register by June 18, 2024.  To register, visit: tnrd.ca/upcoming-events, or contact the TNRD at 1-877-377-8673 or invasiveplants@tnrd.ca.

About Invasive Plants

Invasive plants are plants that do not occur naturally in B.C. The presence of invasive plants can cause environmental and/or economic harm, and some species can harm human health. They are extremely aggressive, reproduce rapidly, and often out-compete crops and native vegetation.

About the TNIPMC

The TNIPMC is administered by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and is comprised of 11 members. Representation comes from a variety of perspectives including First Nations, industry members, government, academia, and more. This Committee works together to stop the spread of invasive plants in the TNRD through treatment, education, coordination, and communication. For more information, visit: tnrd.ca/invasiveplants.
