Irrigation Permitted for Spences Bridge, Enhanced Watering Restrictions in Place

Kamloops, BC – July 24, 2024 – The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and Cook’s Ferry Indian Band (CFIB) have completed repairs on the Spences Bridge Community Water System and operations have been restored. Mandatory water conservation measures have been reduced and irrigation is now permitted with enhanced watering restrictions in place.

Well intake capacity has increased; however, enhanced watering restrictions are needed because well recharge rate and pumping capacity are likely unable to meet anticipated maximum daily demands at this time.

Effective Thursday, July 25, 2024, irrigation is permitted two days per week as follows:

  • Odd-Numbered Addresses: Watering permitted on Monday and Thursday once per day, between 5 am and 9 am or between 6 pm and 10 pm
  • Even-Numbered Addresses: Watering permitted on Tuesday and Friday once per day, between 5 am and 9 am or between 6 pm and 10 pm

Please note that hand-watering with a spring-loaded nozzle is permitted at any time.

The TNRD and CFIB continue to investigate the overall health of the aquifer and anticipate keeping these enhanced watering restrictions in place for the remainder of the current irrigating season.

“We thank residents for their cooperation, and we appreciate conservation efforts made by the community to date,” said Tyrone McCabe, TNRD Utility Services Manager. “After the Water Conservation Notice was issued on July 16, we saw an instant improvement in our reservoir levels. This cooperation by residents made sure that water remained available for essential uses until our repair work was finished.”

The TNRD and CFIB recognize that the Shetland Creek wildfire remains active and in close proximity to the Spences Bridge area. Watering restrictions are unrelated to this wildfire, and there is no imminent threat to the area within the Community Water System boundaries. Fire crews would draw water from the Thompson River for use of structure protection equipment, and would not use the Community Water System.

The Spences Bridge Community Water Systems serves approximately 135 customers within TNRD Electoral Area “I” (Blue Sky Country), and portions of the CFIB.
