Public Engagement Begins for New Official Community Plans in Four Electoral Areas

Kamloops, BC – May 30, 2024 – The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is inviting residents and property owners in four Electoral Areas to take part in public engagement opportunities in the coming months as part of planning for new a Official Community Plan (OCP) in their respective areas.

An OCP is the vision a community has for its future. It contains goals and policies that will shape future land use to reflect the community’s long-term expectations. An OCP influences many aspects of a community including infrastructure, recreation, and land uses such as residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural.

The areas where new OCPs are being created are as follows:

  • Electoral Areas “L” (Grasslands) and “P” (Rivers and the Peaks): The new OCP will cover the entirety of these Electoral Areas, replacing three existing OCPs that cover only portions of each Electoral Area (Kamloops North OCP; Kamloops South OCP, South Thompson Valley and Pinantan OCP). The new OCP will also amalgamate with the South Thompson Settlement Strategy.
  • Electoral Areas “M” (Beautiful Nicola Valley – North) and “N” (Beautiful Nicola Valley – South): This new OCP will also cover the entirety of these Electoral Areas, and will replace the current Nicola Valley OCP which only covers Lower Nicola and areas near City of Merritt boundaries.

The TNRD has launched surveys for the two respective OCPs, and residents are encouraged to complete the survey by August 31, 2024, for a chance to be entered into a prize draw.

Additionally, community meetings will be scheduled in fall 2024 for residents in affected areas. Further information will be communicated with residents when meeting dates and times are set.

“Current OCPs in these Electoral Areas need to be updated due to growth, and expanding these OCPs to include the entirety of these Electoral Areas will ensure consistent development guidelines throughout these areas,” said Alex Krause, TNRD General Manager of Development Services. “We encourage residents to take part in this process and share their ideas and vision for the future of their communities and neighbourhoods.”
